Smart homes are getting better at understanding our habits. But what happens when they get better at predicting us than responding to us?
The Couch Turned First
Do you remember when your couch turned to face the screen instead of the window? Somewhere along the way, the good light stopped being something you sat in and became something you scroll instead.
That quiet shift didn't stop at the couch. It's spreading — into smart devices, and increasingly AI-powered ones, that are still new to most homes, but reshaping the ones that have them, fast.
Every morning, around 6:47, the vacuum leaves its dock and runs a route it's run a hundred times before. It knows the coffee table sits four centimetres closer to the window than it used to — the rug got pulled up to give it a clearer path. What it doesn't know is that someone's asleep on the couch under a blanket that wasn't there yesterday. It nudges their foot anyway. As far as the vacuum's concerned, the room is a floor plan. Not a place someone fell asleep.
Even the newest robot vacuums are catching up to the same logic, just with better eyes. Matic, the U.S. startup that replaced lidar with onboard cameras and on-device AI, processing everything locally instead of in the cloud, can now tell a rug from a floorboard and adjust its cleaning in real time. It still doesn't know someone's asleep under a blanket. It's gotten better at reading the floor. Not the room.
Down the hall, the thermostat has already decided the day starts at 6:30, whether the person in the bed agreed or not. In the living room, the smart lights have been dimming toward "focus mode" for twenty minutes, because it's a weekday, and weekdays mean focus, according to a setting nobody remembers choosing. The doorbell app pings mid-sentence, mid-coffee — someone's on the porch, and it wants an answer that very moment.
We've all felt some version of this: a room doing something we didn't ask it to do, on a schedule we didn't set, for a reason that has nothing to do with how we're actually spending the morning.
The room adapts to the device. Not the other way around.
It happens slowly — one turned couch, one rearranged rug, one overridden alarm at a time — until the room has reorganised itself around a handful of smart, and increasingly AI-driven, systems nobody in the house is actually thinking about most days. And here's the thing worth saying plainly: none of them — not the screen, not the cleaning, not the thermostat, not the lights — ever asked what the room is actually for. Us. Our life in it.
Three Kinds of Home
The couch already turned. These other systems are next, and moving faster than most of us have noticed — and not just here. According to 2024–25 Australian smart-home research, about one in five Australian homes now run a robot vacuum, and close to a third have some kind of camera or security system watching the front door; 7.6 million Australian households have taken on at least one smart device, and nearly a third of those run five or more at once. In the U.S., robot vacuum ownership sits at just under a quarter of households, and the average American smart home runs eleven connected devices. In the U.K., 79% of adults now own at least one smart home product — one in ten households already has a robot vacuum, and another 15% say they're buying one within the year. Different countries, same curve — quiet, steep, and still climbing. That's not a household trying out a gadget. That's a lot of rooms reorganising themselves around several systems at once — none of them talking to each other, and none of them built to ask what the room needs to feel like today.
It helps to name what's actually different between them, because "smart" and "AI" get used like they're the same thing, and they're not — and neither one is quite what a room actually needs.

Room for Questions
Before we get into why this matters, it's worth checking whether it's true for you. Walk your rooms and ask:
Where has the furniture actually moved — not because you decided to redecorate, but because something needed a clearer run at the room?
When did the lights start making that call instead of you?
Does your couch face the window, or the screen?
Does your doorbell decide who's welcome before you do?
When did you last say no to one of these systems, instead of it deciding for you?
No statistics or study needed for this one. The answers are already in the room.
Less of a Place to Be
Here's the plain version, said softly: our devices are quietly creeping into our rooms. The moods and moments that actually make up our life are getting compressed, stowed away, one setting at a time.
Rooms used to answer to mood — our mood. To how we felt walking in, to what a particular evening called for, to the fact that the same room has to hold a quiet Sunday and a chaotic Monday without being rebuilt in between, just to house our routines. Increasingly, they're getting repurposed to a smart schedule, or a sensor, or a setting chosen from a bunch of presets on a screen — a robot vacuum's weekly cleaning tasks, a thermostat's weekday routine. Because flexibility was never a familiar term for pre-selected efficiencies.
A room built around how you actually want to live in it moves with you — quieter some nights, brighter for a dinner, rearranged on a whim because the mood called for it. A room shaped by device habits doesn't move that way. It settles on one setting, and stays there.
The room is quietly becoming less of a place to be, more of a performance report of to-dos, and things, and rings.
Sneakers in the Hallway
A room doesn't need the same thing every day, and that's not a flaw to fix — it's just how a life actually moves. Some Tuesdays call for focus. Others call for the opposite: a slower light, a quieter corner, permission to do nothing in particular. Sneakers get left in the hallway overnight — not put away, not forgotten, just there — and the vacuum runs its route into them at six the next morning regardless. Then there's the weekday you actually needed to sleep in, the one your body was asking for, and the thermostat wakes you anyway, on schedule. Life doesn't move in a straight line. It moves mood to mood, hour to hour, curated in the moment — and none of that is a problem to be optimised away.
This matters now, specifically, because none of it has hardened into "how homes just are" yet. The layout, the habits, the defaults are still being set. Which means the choices being made this year, in ordinary living rooms, about what the vacuum gets to move and what the doorbell gets to see, are setting the terms for what comes next.
None of this feels like a decision. That's the danger. A rug pulled up, a couch turned, a schedule accepted once — none of it registers as a choice being made. But it compounds the same way anything repeated daily does. The room being shaped this way, one small accommodation at a time, is the room that becomes normal — the one your kids grow up thinking a home just looks like.
Maybe real luxury isn't all about a smart home, or a self-sustaining one. Maybe it's also about a place that feels like us, while being smart — one that, while being efficient, happily accommodates our ever-changing moods.
Put the Couch Back
None of this is an argument against the vacuum, the lights, or the doorbell. It's an argument for staying the one making the calls in your own room.
Turn one automation off for a week and notice what happens — the schedule that quietly disappears, or the one you didn't realise you'd started depending on.
Put the couch back where it actually wants to be, not where the screen asks it to be.
Next time a device overrides a choice of yours — the thermostat over a sleep-in, the lights over a mood — say no to it, on purpose, and notice how that feels.
Small as they are, these are the difference between a room that serves a system and a room that still serves you.
Room for Both
Here's the real shape of it: our rooms were never designed for devices. They're getting taken over by them — by the habits that quietly form around a schedule, a sensor, a route — until the actual feel of living in a room gets stowed away without anyone deciding that on purpose.
So the question isn't how to reverse any of it. It's how we make room feel warm and welcoming — for our moods, our moments, the nuances of an actual life — while we keep accommodating the devices we've chosen to have. What does a room look like when it holds both at once?
